Yu-gi-oh! GX Overview
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX follows the exploits of Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki in the original Japanese version) and his companions as he attends Duel Academy which takes place several years after the previous Yu-Gi-Oh! series, Yugioh GX is set in a "Duel Monsters" boarding school where pencils and books are replaced by Duel Disks and monster cards. This is where new game designers and future dueling champions train to master the now legendary card game known as Duel Monsters.
The players are separated into 3 dorms, depending on their grades and dueling skills. The best students are in "Obelisk Blue," the intermediate students are in "Ra Yellow," and the beginners are placed in "Slifer Red." These dorms are named after the three Egyptian God Cards.
A Duel typically begins with each contestant being given a life total of 4,000 Life Points, which can be decreased as opposing players "attack" him/her with their monsters or trigger the abilities of individual cards. The objective is to reduce an opponent's Life Points to zero, and therefore be declared the winner.
Although conceived solely as a card game, Duel Monsters' roots are mythological in nature, and many exploit its otherworldly secrets for their own personal gain.
Yugioh GX Plot Summary
Plot Summary: Ten years after the Ceremonial Battle, a teenage boy named Yuki Judai heads off in order to join the Duelist Yousei School located on a remote island off the coast of Japan. There he meets his fellow students and gains a few friends, along with a few enemies. Judai is put into the lowest rank of Osiris Red, but he continues to test his skills against the students and faculty to prove his worth as a Yousei Duelist and earn the respect of everyone around him.
One of the highlights of the series in this manga form is the artwork. Although many people may be used to seeing the duels in action, they will not be disappointed with the attempts that have been made to capture that same feel in the form of the artwork and design.
A few of the battle sequences and panels look amazing with the instants that the writer Naoyuki Kageyama decided to capture, for example when Alexis is taking an attack she is literally bathing in the midst of the light blast being emitted by the attack. There are many other instances like them and they are well.
Other benefits is the attention to detail paid in the new cards that were created for the story as well as the characters. They look exactly as they do in the anime (by the way, the anime and this were done by two different teams).
